Choose your base by where you will be at night. For the LANXESS arena and Koelnmesse, Deutz is shortest, a few minutes from Messe/Deutz and a walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge to the Altstadt, but it sells out quickly during gamescom. The Altstadt and main-station area suit rail travellers but are noisy and pricey, especially at carnival. Ehrenfeld is best for Live Music Hall gigs, and Mülheim is cheaper for the Palladium and E-Werk. The Südstadt is calmer. Check night services on the KVB timetable, and book early for carnival, gamescom and the fireworks. Leverkusen and Bonn are fallbacks, though late trains can be a problem.
